OBJECT// Antique very impressive maritime sailors work walking stick showing the most amazing example of knot weaving work, the whole body from top to bottom is woven and knotted from some type of natural ratan or grass, sailors work is a type of art or craft that sailors would produce on very long sea voyages to help pass the time at sea, it is often made from things that were available, the most famous example of sailors art is of course scrimshaw produced by the whalers, this cane although simple in form is a actually a tour de force of weaving and knot work, sailors often became experts in their chosen filled as they had so much time to practice and they used the skills in their daily work aboard ship, the cane is rich in maritime is a historical object to a great age of discovery in the 18th century, one fine feature is a single ships handmade stud nail holds the entire rattan in place at the top, dating from the 18th century, genuine antique, superb colour and patina, serious collectors object.
