Antique Peranakan Straits Chinese Nonya " Pintu Pagar " Finials
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:43220 |
Pintu Pagar are the carved swing doors on the front entrance of traditional Straits Chinese houses.. These finials were attached to the supporting post on either side of the doors. The carving is typically Malaccan from the later half of the 19th. century. The original finish is dark brownish red lacquer with gold leaf finish. There are many places where it has worn off to show the v...ery fine grain wood underneath. This has actually created a lovely "weathered" look. On each finial are two figures and an animal or bird. On one are two figures, one is carrying a basket and there is a spotted deer. On the other is a figure feeding a large bird and another whose hand has unfortunately broken off. Both couples appear to be on balconies, each with different foliage. The faces on the male figures are well carved.
Judging by the quality of these finials the doors must have belonged to one of the lovely old houses on Heeren St. or nearby in Malacca. They were purchased there in early 1970's, (no sign of the doors.).
