W. H. Harling made nothing but handmade slide rules, never switching to automated dividing engines. Under high magnification you can see that all the lines and tick marks were hand-scribed, and the numbers were hand-stamped, even on their celluloid-faced slide rules, like this one. This slide rule would be considered an improved Mannheim model, with the addition of a K scale. Only the S, L, and T scales on the back of the slide are labeled. Look closely and you ...can see that the inch ruler on the beveled upper edge is divided decimally, 10 divisions per inch. This is a characteristic thing for W. H. Harling slide rules. I don’t know why, to my knowledge they never used the 10” ruler as an L scale, as some other manufacturers did. This slide rule must have been UK government property at some time as the Air Ministry has put their stamp on the back.
This slide rule is in outstanding condition, but it has the wrong cursor. This cursor appears to be from an A. G. Thornton “PIC” slide rule, and is a little too wide for this rule. It will pull straight off the front of the rule, as the cursor’s two guides are never in both of the grooves on the slide rule at the same time.
This slide rule is from the collection of Robert K. (“Bob”) Otnes, PhD, one of the founding members of the Oughtred Society and the original editor of the Journal of the Oughtred Society. It is being sold by the Oughtred Society on his behalf.
