The Universal film Fast Times at Ridgemont High was adapted by Cameron Crowe from a non-fiction book [published in 1981], which Crowe had written after a year spent at Clairemont High School in San Diego, California. He went undercover [at age 22!] to do research for the book Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A True Story, about his observations of the high school and the students he befriended there, including then-student Andy Rathbone, on whom the character Mark "Rat" Ratne...r was modeled.
The film that was partially based on the book came out at the end of July in the summer of 1982, and this movie tie-in trade paperback was a fall release, following in mid-September.
The cover image art features Sean Penn with two admirers, in a variation of the original one-sheet movie poster.
There have been no other printings since then, hence it's incredible rarity.
Perhaps the enormous popularity of the film made it difficult for readers to understand the premise and reality of the book, and Crowe did not authorize a film novelization to be written.
