Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:4338807 |
The three-panel, double-fold publication measures 12-1/2 inches wide when open up -- that is, showing the painted image against a grey ground. The single panels themselves each measure 4-1/4 inches wide by 9-1/2 inches high.
The 15 panels of text of the brochure all have a pink-blossom-filled box at the top with "St. John River Valley" printed within and a small pink logo reading "The / National / Way" running along the bottom margin between two horizontal lines. The centerfold is a huge colored map of the area, with two groups of three black-and-white photographs on either side. In all, there are 17 black-and-white photos inside, showing:The St. John River -- GagetownTowing a Raft -- St. John RiverThe St John River -- PokiokElm Lined Street -- FrederictonA Woodstock ResidenceThe St. John River -- WoodstockThe St. John River -- EdmundstonLow Tide -- River Running DownSlack WaterHigh Tide -- River Running UpThe FallsThe Great WellThe Gorge Below the FallsDevelopment Along the New Line. There are pink headings on the pages, some with side headings within those sections, and they are:The St. John River The River Towns (St. John, Fredericton, Woodstock, St. Leonard / Grand Falls / Edmundston)The River's History in BriefThe "North Shore" and GaspeThe ProvinceHunting and FishingGeneral Remarks of General Interest (Railways)
The last panel, printed in much smaller type, has information for tourists (including Americans, who "do not require passports") and includes a list of hotels, with their prices ranging from $1 to $5 per day. There's also a list of names and addresses from which you can obtain a "booklet descriptive of other portions of the Dominion reached by Canadian National Railways, " as well as a list of "United States Agencies in various American cities.
The lovely color map occupying most of the centerfold -- it looks like the original was a watercolor -- has printed at the top "The Valley of the St. John River" and at the bottom "Canadian National Railways." There are small inset images captioned:Salmon Fishing Tobique RiverBig Game Miramichi RiverPokiok FallsNear Boiestown Miramichi ValleyThe Cathedral FrederictonSt. John River ValleyNear RothesayValley of the Kennebecasis
The map -- with "PRINTED IN CANADA" at the bottom right corner -- has black lines throughout indicating the routes of Canadian National Railways trains, with the stops and branch names listed as well.
The overall condition of this Canadian National Railways publication is very good, considering its great age. There's very slight corner-bumping, edgewear, fading / discoloration, spotting, chipping, creasing, smudging, etc., to the glossy wrapper and pages, which may be a bit age-toned. The paper is clean and unmarked by human hands, with no annotations, marginalia, underlining, scribbles, etc. Amazingly, there's no rusting of the two silver-tone metal staples. The booklet has neither a musty nor smoky odor. This well-preserved vintage travel brochure is being sold AS IS, AS DESCRIBED ABOVE AND PICTURED WITHIN. I am setting what I feel is a reasonable starting price for the item, and there is NO RESERVE.
Shipping and handling for the publication: $3 to U.S. addresses (via Media Mail) and $11 to Canada and $15 to Europe, Japan, Australia, South America, and elsewhere in the world (the latter two via First Class International Mail, aka Air Mail).
