The Rifleman horse and rider themed logo has been in use by Marlin since 1964. It originated as an illustration by Frederic Remington for a "Harper's Monthly" 1895 issue.
In 1895 an oil painting by Remington with the same theme was done, and it was entitled "Danger Ahead".
Founder John Marlin commissioned a painting of the center figure from "Danger Ahead", which was also used as the cover on the 1900 catalog.
A similar scene is found in the sketch titled "At Last", as it appears in a Remington Sketch Book called "Done In The Open", published in 1903.
Close examination will show the rifle in the 1895 painting to be an 1881 Model Marlin, and the rifle in the 1900 catalog copy is an 1895 Model.
