There is very little I can say about this planimeter that you can’t see for yourself in the pictures. It is marked Charles Bruning Co., it was made in Germany, it is model No. 4840, serial number 3383, and it is very clearly a copy of an early Amsler planimeter design. The calibration information on the pole arm weight is in inches, indicating that it was made for the UK/USA market. There is significant corrosion on the tracing wheel, and many points of scrapes and ...paint loss. Although you can’t see the bottom part of it, the tracing point support is there. I thought it must have broken off, but no, the smooth, spherical tip of it barely protrudes from the underside of the tracing arm. It is not long enough to get down to the paper no matter how you adjust it, so I don’t see the point of it. The worm gear to turn the multiplier wheel is of an unusually large diameter, with more threads than necessary, a feature I’ve only seen before on a planimeter marked “Bowen.” This planimeter is from the collection of Robert K. (“Bob”) Otnes, PhD, one of the founding members of the Oughtred Society and the original editor of the Journal of the Oughtred Society. It is being sold by the Oughtred Society on his behalf. The Oughtred Society was founded in 1991 by a group of slide rule collectors and is dedicated to the preservation and history of slide rules and other calculating instruments.
