Large Pair of Ming Dynasty Tomb Guardian Figures - CHINA - Circa 1368 to 1644 AD
Pair of large glazed terracotta tomb guardians dating from the Ming Dynasty of China. Large size indicates these were made for a person of wealth and privilege, or an important official. Made of terracotta, fired at a low temperature and clothing highlighted in green glaze. Glaze drips occurred during manufacture. Some craculature to glaze. Heads molded separately and... fit inside the neck opening. Heads, hands and bases are painted, but unglazed in typical Ming style. Figures originally held weapons or stanchions made of wood, or possibly bronze. No major issues or repairs. Purchased years ago at auction, these are part of my personal collection that I am selling to downsize. A nice pair!
