This is your chance to own a unique piece of American numismatic history!
A letter from the United States Treasury, dated 4th of December 1867 in return of a request to replace mutilated baknotes. However, one of the banknotes was a counterfeit and therefore not replaced. $3, 03 was replaced instead of $3, 53 as can be read in the handwritten part of the text. The original damaged counterfeit note was included and stapled to the right bottom corner of the letter (the stapl...e is no longer there). The 50c fractional note (of the P104, 1863 type) has been stamped with a 'COUNTERFEIT' stamp and the used ink has eaten away part of the note. The included cover was cancelled with a 'WASHINGTON D.C. FREE cancellation'. Both the letter and the cover have printed autographs of Francis E. Spinner, the U.S. Treasurer from March 16, 1861 to July 30, 1875. The letter has been addressed to D.C. (Don Carlos) Pollard, Proctorsville, Vermont. Don Carlos Pollard (1840-1921) was born in Plymouth, Vermont, and, as a child lived in the home where President Coolidge took his oath of office. He married SarahJane Moor (1841-1935), also of Plymouth, who was the maternal aunt of Calvin Coolidge. Don Pollard ran the general store in Plymouth Notch; was elected a state senator in 1912; and served as the Cavendish selectman for 17 years. He later moved his business to Cavendish in 1863. His children, Fred Don (1861-1935) and Park Hiram (1869-1955) Pollard were associated with the Cavendish store. Specifically, Fred DonPollard was operator of the store and also married Lois Etta Bryant of Weston, Vermont. Park Hiram Pollard, in addition to working in the store, was also a candidate for Vermont governor in 1930 and 1942. Don and Jane Pollard’s other children included Dallas Franklin (1875-1973), who ran a dry goods store in Bellows Falls, and Mary Victoria (1863-1892).
Included are the letter, the cover and the counterfeit note, condition as seen on the scans.
