This gilt sterling inkwell stands 3.5" tall, 2.5" in diameter at its widest point. The base is 1.5" square has has a pierced base . There are swags around the piece which are held in the mouths of four lion faces. The well has a hinged lid, and the inside as well as the outside is gilded. It was made by Mappin and Webb of Birmingham and is hallmarked with their mark, the Birmingham anchor and the lion silver mark. It does not have a date mark but probably dates to ca 1910. It is very ...heavy--195 grams and is not weighted. It is in very good condition with no dents, no damage to the hinge and has no monograms. It does not have an insert. Also, it appears to have been attached to a larger piece since a screw has been ground off under the base. It does have minor gold wear on the lid and it does have a bit of a wobble. Beautiful piece.
