This was an early production of either Ben Wade or Preben Holm, and was marked SII over the small pit above the nomenclature, so thus, a masterfully carved pipe was marked down. There is no goof or flaw on the maker's part. From the shank to the bowl the carving is detailed with a wave like patten, capturing the feeling of a sail blowing in the wind, or drapery in a window on a breezy day. The straight grain stands out from across the room. It's light and begs to be held a certain way.... It is not excessively large, but just right, not small. The stem is wide, and a bite mark was filled. I honestly cannot believe they wouldn't put their name to such an exquisite pipe. Some high end makers didn't shy away from pits, but considered them a part of it, which is a philosophy I understand. Burak was one who designed pipes, but didn't carve, and demanded the pits be left alone as a natural part of the pipe, rebelling in a way of the rejection of small blemishes. Also, in my pint of view, a natural pit, especially on a pipe with plateau briar sections steals nothing from the aesthetics, but each maker has their own standards, and there are different levels of it. This is a beauty, with a lot of wood around a standard chamber. I believe the stem to be Preben Holm, but I am not the freehand authority. I do know it is a great smoker, and one that is sure to impress. If I had to guess which maker for a thousand dollars I would call it Preben Holm.
