The flag frame is printed in blue and the shield in red. The desi...gn was created so that the designation - listed in red letters - overflowed into the press with a blue flag. Most of the figurative marks had problems with color registration, which is exaggerated due to the strangely placed marking. Picture series from 1869The appearance of the Pictures from 1869 meant a significant change in the design of US stamps. For the first time in American postal history, the stamp depicted something other than portraits of national participants. These were the first American stamps to be printed in two colors. Printing in two colors required the stamps to be passed through the press twice; once to print the vignette (center design) and then again to print the frame. Negligence in merging the two impressions resulted in rare inverts. Instead of an inverted center, the stamp actually has an inverted frame because the center design was printed first. The 30 30 and Eagle shield with inverted flags is the rarest of the 1869 inversions. Least obvious of the three, it was the last one discovered. The images were to be produced by the National Bank Note Company for four years. When they were issued, stamps were unpopular with the public. They were withdrawn from sale within one year of release. Today, pictorial numbers are the most popular of the classic stamps from the years 1840 - 1870. Due to the fact that the stamps were in circulation for only a year, it is increasingly difficult to find them in unused and used condition.
