Rare! Vintage Original 1960s early Thimble Drome 'Prop Rod' Tether Race Car. Original L.M. Cox tethered gas powered race car, circa early-1970s. Manufactured by L.M. Cox Mfg. Co., Santa Ana, Calif. This Prop-Rod car was one of the models produced by L.M. Cox Manufacturing, it has the smooth plastic belly pan. For many years the models went by the trade name of Thimble Drome, but later were know simply as Cox models. It was featured in ma...gazine advertisements as early as 1961 when it appeared in American Modeler.
The Prop-Rod came with a Babe Bee .049 engine that had an inverted cylinder. The .049 engine is free with good compression, it had a two blade prop rather than the correct three blade propeller. It was designed to run either on a tether stretched along a sidewalk, on a tether mounted in the center of a circle, or it could just run free. This example retains some of the original number 9 on each side, It also has the original clear canopy on the cockpit. The Prop-Rod is a little over 12 inches long and 6 inches wide. All four rubber tires are good, no missing chunks of rubber, the original steering wheel is intact. This unit has the plastic belly pan. Nice original condition.
