Original Description:
FINE SET OF 4 RARE ANTIQUE 18TH CENTURYSOLID STERLING SILVER SPOONS –  BRIGHT CUT DECORATION TO STEMS &FINIALS - 'R F G' TO TERMINALS - OLD ENGLISH PATTERN - HIGH QUALITY - GEORGEGRAY – GEORGE III ERA - HALLMARKED LONDON 1791 – HIGHLY COLLECTABLE!On offer is this fine set of four antiquesolid sterling silver spoons.  What makes them special is that they datefrom the 18th century, to the later middle era of George III (1760-1820), hallmarked for London 1791.  Th...e spoons are of the classic Old Englishpattern.  To the stems and finials there is an attractive pattern inbright cut silver and the initials 'R F G' to the terminals - please see thephotos.  Judging from the style, the decoration andmonogram appears to be contemporary to the spoons.Theywere crafted by quality maker, George Gray. They are highly collectable as, not only are they from the 18thcentury, the maker's mark is overstruck on the mark of Peter & Ann Bateman.  This was often seen with this maker and youcan see the faint outline of a Bateman mark underneath the George Gray mark onat least one of the spoons.  I don’t knowa lot about this practice but I imagine it wasn't looked on with approval! Just imagine, these beautiful spoons werecrafted only two years after the French Revolution!  I love to wonderabout the original, and subsequent, owners of items such as these - one of thejoys of very old silver flatware.  Remember, pieces of flatware such as this are a nice way of starting or adding to your collectionof antique silver, particularly spoons from the 18th century. Asa welcome distraction in these troubled days, why not start your own collectionof antique silver?  It need not beexpensive and you will have something to value and pass on when better timesreturn.   Personally, I love silver and am very interested in its history and use, so much so that Iam currently training as a silversmith and jeweller.  Last year Iobtained my own hallmark at the London Assay Office.  If you have any questions about antiquesilver, please feel free to contact me and I will try my best to answer yourqueries.  Pleasenote I do not do valuations. HALLMARKS:          As above and the collectable mark ofGeorge III's Sovereign's Head to show that duty tax was paid on these piece ofsilver, only introduced in 1784.   APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS/WEIGHT:                        They are about 12.4cm in length and weighjust over 44g in total.   CONDITION:                       Overall, they are in good antique condition, especially considering they are 229 yearsold, just the usual signs of wear commensurate with age and use of antiquepractical pieces of silver flatware.  Theonly point to note is that one has a repair to the bowl/stem area and a smalltear across the top from the edge of the bowl where the repair has notheld.  Normally, I would have repaired itbut it's so small and I didn't want to stress the silver by doing anotherrepair when it's already had one.  Anydark marks, etc are reflections or bits of age-related patina. This is a highly collectable set of four solid silverspoons from the 18th century by George Gray, overstruck on the markof Peter & Ann Bateman, hallmarked London 1791.
THANK YOU FOR LOOKING  P.S.  Whilst you are here, why not take a look atour other lovely pieces of solid silver?  In particular, we have a pair of highly collectable 18th century spoons by Thomas Wallis II, hallmarked London 1796.
