WRIGHT FLYER
This historic photograph records the moment when man first truly conquered the air. At 10:35 on the morning of December 17, 1903, Orville Wright piloted a flimsy plan...e made of wood, wire, and cloth along a track laid on the sand dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and into the raw gray sky. The little craft soared a distance of forty yards as Orville's brother Wilbur (at right) watched breathlessly. The Wright Flyer was powered by a homemade four-cylinder, 12-horsepower gaso- line engine which drove twin pusher propellers by means of bicycle chains. The Flyer was controlled by "warping" or changing the angle of its wings, and by shifting the rudder and front elevator system. Skids were used to land on the sand, Before the day was out the Wrights had kept their contraption in the air for almost a minute, covering half a mile and reaching a speed of 30 miles per hour. The Air Age had begun.
