Apatosaurus Collecting Location: Morrison Formation in Utah Age: Jurassic Period, 19 Million Years Old Description: Apatosaurus was a large, long-necked, animal that walked on all four legs and had a long, whip-like tail. Its front legs were slightly shorter than its hind legs. It is believed that adult apatosaurus measured between 70 and 75 ...ft from nose to tail and weighed between 18 and 24 tons. Pretty impressive because all of this growth was accomplished on a vegetarian diet. If you are a fan of the Flintstones cartoon by Hanna Barbera you will recognize its alias, brontosaurus.
Maiasaura Collecting Location: Two Medicine Formation near Dupuyer, Montana Age: Cretaceous Period, 80 Million Years Old Description: Maiasaurs were large, growing to a maximum known length of about 30 feet. They had a flat beak typical of hadrosaurids, and thick noses. They had a small, spiky crest in front of the eyes. This crest may have been used in headbutting contests between males during the breeding season. Maiasaurs were herbivors that walked on either two or four legs. They appeared to have no defense against predators, except its heavy muscular tail and their herd behavior. Herds were extremely large and could have numbered 10, 000 individuals in one group.
Achelousauras Collecting Location: Two Medicine Formation near Dupuyer, Montana Age: Cretaceous Period, Million Years Old Description: Achelousaurus is an dinosaur with two large horns. Size wise it is estimated to have been 20 feet long with a weight of 3 tons. As a ceratopsid (horned dinosaur), Achelousaurus would have walked on 4 legs that had hoofed digits and a shortened, downwards swept tail. Its very large head, which would have rested on a straight neck, had a hooked upper beak, very large nasal openings and long tooth rows that allowed it to graze and eat plants.
Edmontosaurus Collecting Location: Hell Creek Formation in South Central Montana Age: Cretaceous Period, 66 Million Years Old Description: Edmontosaurus was a bulky animal with a long, laterally flattened tail and a head with an expanded, duck-like beak (yep, Ducky of Land Before Time fame}. The fore legs were not as heavily built as the hind legs, but were long enough to be used in standing or moving. Edmontosaurus was among the largest hadrosaurs [duck billed dinos], growing between 30 and 40 feet in length and weighing up to 4.5 tons. The lived and traveled in very large herds. One fossil deposit in Wyoming contained the remains of over 15, 000 individuals.
Triceratops Collecting Location: Hell Creek Formation in South Central Montana Age: Cretaceous Period, 66 Million Years Old Description: Definitely one of the most well know of all the dinosaurs, Triceratops is the official state fossil of South Dakota, and the official state dinosaur of Wyoming. It is a large, four legged vegetarian that has a large protective frill covering its neck and upper back with three large horns protruding out of its skull to help protect it from predators.
