This small 29 page booklet titled "First Water" is packed with detailed history about early fire fighting machines including the invention of steam engines and explaining the 140 year history of American LaFrance, builder of Fire Engines from 1832 to 1972. It begins telling about the 1st fire engine known to arrive in the United States was in Boston in 1679; a wooden hand pump or "tub" imported from England. The 1st piece of fire apparatus made in this country is believed t...o be a hand pump made by Thomas Lote in 1743. From Waterford, NY to the Erie Canal, to London, NYC & Cincinnati, Ohio early fire apparatus was being designed and built & improved upon. This little booklet measures 5" x 6 3/4", was copyrighted in 1972 and printed in the USA. There is so much interesting info about the progress of the industry and I was sad to learn that "The American LaFrance Truck Company was never a profitable operation due principally to the fact that being a quality manufacturer, they built more into a truck than did competitors and thus they could not meet going prices".
