Check out this pebble from one of California's numerous mining districts. There is a profusion of gold particles glimmering in this rock from stem to stern. I guarantee the gold inclusions are the Real McCoy. Ba...ck when placer-mining was my vocation, the dream was some day to find a desert wash full of rich, gold-bearing rocks like this one. Since that never happened, what I do now is acquire native gold specimens through the minerals and mining community and pass them on to other collectors. All my specimens show visible gold and are authentic gold nuggets or gold quartz specimens.

I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but I never found a piece with visible gold. Hydrothermal solutions carrying gold and silica crystallized into veins of gold quartz and created the massive geothermal, hot-springs deposits found in Nevada. This specimen comes from one of the many gold deposits discovered in The Silver State of Nevada, U.S.A. MAGNETITE MANDuring one of our expeditions into the La Paz County outback, a friend and partner, relying upon what he thought was prospecting savvy, helped me stake some claims. Within districts of the Dome Rock Mountains, in canyon systems to the east, west, and to the south, there were proven gold placer deposits. Where we staked our claims, with schist, quartzsite, and granite contacts in spades, the geology looked identical to that of adjoining gold-bearing districts. Conditions, in fact, looked very promising and my enthusiasm was running high. Quartz outcroppings adorned the mountainsides like painted-white graffiti. Boulders of oxidized quartz float and nodules of magnetite lay scattered everywhere and was heavily-concentrated in local washes and arroyos. The prize claims I had my eye on, for some unknown reason, had lapsed. I thought to myself, "man, this is gonna be good. How lucky can a guy get?" Packing my drywasher up into the canyons, we made numerous test runs in likely-looking placer zones. Black sand spilled off the end of my drywasher tray as we began sampling. With expectations running high, we poured the concentrator box contents into our gold pans. At this point, I would like to say someone shouted "all right", "cool", "eureka", or "wow"! Because this experience is being recounted thirty some odd years further up the road, I'm guessing my pard and I looked at one another, quietly shook our heads in disappointment, and began packing up our gear. The sad truth is, not one solitary pin-prick of gold found it's way into our drywasher riffles; nothing but piles of fine magnetite sands, aka 'black sands'. We just figured "what's the sense kicking a dead horse?" Doesn't it seem to hold that failures is what teaches us the most valuable lessons? There is only one thing which demonstrates beyond a shadow of doubt that a mining claim contains a mineable quantity of gold, that being 'yeller', not black, winking at you from your pan.
