From California
Comparing world-wide varieties of gold quartz, it would seem California is the most prolific source. If there's better sources out there, I've not found them.
Photos are enlarged representations of this cab.
I call this crazy ore 'Purple Sage'. Both sides of this semi-cushion cut stone are pictured. The top and sides have been polished. Lively figurines in ...gold adorn the show face. More residual colors combine with the gold to paint a pretty picture. This rare cab measures 8.7 mm long, 7.4 mm wide, and 2.3 mm thick. Except to say it's from California's Mother Lode, the exact source is unknown. Born in the Golden State, this is natural gemstone; original, rare, and exotic even for the Mother of all Lodes.
As the operator/sole proprietor of Gold of Eldorado, I actively mined gold for 18+ years. Beginning long ago, in a past life, perhaps, something in the golden mystique of this rare, precious metal attracted me to it. Searching for Au (gold), working with it in it's multitude of forms has become a life-way. This passion is what fuels my desire to bring these new discoveries to your attention.
If, like myself, you're an avid fan of gold, please let me know of any specific sizes, colors, or cabochon-shapes you might be interested in. I may be able to accommodate you with a custom-made creation.

VANISHING GOLD
It's sure nerve-wracking as you grind away on the atomizer and suddenly realize gold has vanished from a key spot on the stone’s surface where it needed to remain. Accentuating the most visible Au is a lapidist's objective, so seeing it disappear tends to dampen one's spirits. So now you understand a bit more about the process of finishing a gold quartz cab.
Many of the cabs I make from gold rocks are 'collector stones', meaning, they are sub-species found in only one, distinct geographical location on our planet. These sub-species, quite possibly, exist nowhere else on earth. While it's conceivable that similar gold ores have been discovered in other regions, those who found them are not making their existence known. With this Earth Rock ore type, once my scant supply of rough converted into cabs has been depleted, I for-see no more like it appearing on the horizon.
