This is hands down the most interesting of all the Hampton Butte petrified wood we've auctioned this year! It's a very delicate, finely detailed and complete round cross section of petrified wood taken from the end... of a small agate and petrified wood limb found in the Hampton Butte, Oregon, petrified wood site. Unlike most Hampton wood casts, this one has very finely preserved fossil wood structure that shows the smallest of details under magnification! The green wood is from a diffuse porous hardwood similar to birch. You can make out growth structure in most of the green areas in the face, while others are all agate. I've cut and polished the face of this small cross section to show off the incredible play of color inside the stone. Arguably one of the most well known and interesting petrified wood deposits in Oregon is the "Green Wood" deposit at Hampton Butte in Central Oregon. This wood is more jasperized than agatized and is often more of a cast than a wood replacement, though exceptions to both of these are certainly found. The logs are more often than not fairly fractured, but the colors are unmatched anywhere else. The dominant color is green - REALLY GREEN! These are accented with white, yellow, red, orange and other classic jasper tones - but green is what it's all about if you're looking for a good Hampton Butte specimen. Not every piece will polish well, and they don't all look an awful lot like wood, but a good specimen is tough to beat and a must have for any serious petrified wood collection - or even if you just happen to love green! This slab is kind of tough to get a good photo of, but the color is pretty true on my monitor. It's a very green stone. Far greener than most and really stands out as an amazing natural specimen in a color rarely found elsewhere. There's a ton of dark agate agate inclusions throughout the rock and you can make out about as much wood grain as one of these casts typically produces. It's got a pretty high agate concentration and took a nice polish - something we work hard to produce on every stone we sell! I don't see a lot of this wood for sale any more, but it really is one of the more brilliantly colored specimens you'll find in our great state and something you will undoubtedly appreciate most when you see it in person. This is a small but full cross section of petrified wood. No fractures in this one either. If you haven't seen our petrified wood specimens before then you've been missing one of the best treasures found on eBay! We work hard to find the best specimens from the most prized locations and then work with our magic to create a world class specimen for your collection. The piece is quite solid and meant to be handled. A quick squirt of Windex will remove fingerprints from the glassy polished surface. This is an extra small heel cut. It measures about 1.85"" x 1.4" wide and is about 0.14" to 0.33" thick (rough and natural on the back). Weight is 0.04 lbs.
