Original Description:
This is the finest example of this type of wood that I can ever recall polishing.
It's a truly marvelous petrified wood sculpture that deserves a good display location! This is one of the least often seen petrified wood species to come from Wyoming.  There's a small ridge in the Wind River Mountain Range in Central Wyoming that produces a few exotic petrified wood specimens every now and then and this gorgeous petrified beech stand-up sculpture is one of them!&n...bsp; Beech looks similar to oak and sycamore in that the medullary rays are the most obvious thing your eye sees.  The difference is in the microscopic view where the structure of finer rays and pores is visible and more consistent with beech in this specimen.  It is one of the most highly desired of the collectible petrified woods and a round from this unique location is a must have!  Check out the structure of this amazing wood in this microphoto! I've cut this beautifully weathered log end to create one of the most impressive mantle pieces I've ever seen.  It's polished to an absolutely mirror finish that looks amazing in the jet black agate reflection! There are two locations in Oregon that I know of that have produced exceptional sycamore specimens, but I hadn't seen really good ones from Wyoming until a gentleman showed me a small log a couple of years ago. I later looked closer and discovered this wasn't actually sycamore at all, but beech!  This is a large stand-up from a short log that has a really appealing, antiquated shape and absolutely gorgeous high contrast color patterns.  The stone really is much better than the photo can convey in this case - virtually perfect and truly beautiful.  Sycamore is usually identified by the medullary rays that form like the spokes of a wheel running from the heart to the rind and many collectors unknowingly lump the occasional beech specimen they come across in as another sycamore. The visual effect looks like a large fanned out flower - it's absolutely beautiful. The picture doesn't come close to doing it justice, I promise! I guarantee the owner of this exceptional specimen will be equally amazed and mystified! This wedge shaped display piece was cut at a steep sloping angle and then polished to show off all the gemmy detail inside. If you're new to petrified wood collecting,  the highly visible densely rayed woods are undeniably the king of the modern wood species for collectors. Like the oak and sycamore trees,  beech grows with a beautiful radial wood grain pattern. The medullary rays look like spokes in a wheel. Petrified beech wood is relatively uncommon and any petrified wood with the wood grain so faithfully preserved is very uncommon! This piece was cut directly across the wood grain to show the distinctive rays.  The back and sides are naturally articulated and coated with the minerals that have shrouded this log for eons. The details captured here and revealed through the highly polished surface are just immaculate. This find is producing some of the best fossil wood I've ever seen! The rays are gorgeous, the agate is highly polished and the high contrast colors make it a great show piece. It's a truly special find and we won't likely have a lot more so get a piece for your collection while it's available! This large piece stands about 7" tall and measures about 4" wide across the polished face. Weight is about 3.04 lbs. Another Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary quality stone collectible!
