This is a nicely preserved, perfectly prepared, richly colored fossil Araucaria slab that was cut from a really choice petrified log from Madagascar! The shape is an artifact of some bookends I was cutting when I decided the base needed to be cut deeper in the stone with a second pass. The wood was so pretty in it's rip cut orientation that I couldn't help but save it and polish it. The color in this piece is very contemporary and l...oaded with soft pastels. If you are a simple fossil lover then the agate preserving 200 million year old wood grain is something to be admired as well! You have probably seen the bland, lifeless specimens typically offered from this remote island nation, but you haven't really seen what the other side of the world can produce until you've seen one of the specimens we've prepared in our shop! This beautiful slab is brought to life with a mirror finish unmatched by any petrified wood you've ever laid eyes on before! The works we're able to produce from these fossils are truly natural, ancient objects of art. The flat face, antiquated shape and mirror polish bring every detail of this fossil to life, revealing both color and wood growth structure in intricate detail! This gorgeous, absolutely choice petrified wood slab is a whimsical cut from what must be about the most distant petrified wood forest we could find on the other side of the world from Oregon! One of the largest and most productive petrified forests on the planet is on the huge island of Madagascar off the southern African coast. While many have seen the bland and lifeless specimens that are most typically found in this huge deposit, few have had the opportunity to see the top grade, colorful gem fossils that are occasionally unearthed there. Fewer still get to see them properly prepared with a mirror finish to reveal all of the rich fossil wood grain and color! The back and sides are cut smooth though the back reveals some divots that were the motivation to make the face cut. A few years ago we located a new source of logs that have produced some truly museum grade specimens and this stunning monster is definitely one of them! The material was so good in fact that I travelled halfway around the world to be able to select the best pieces this particular forest had to offer! The color alone makes it a collector piece - but add in all the other features in this nearly flawless specimen and you can see why I was so excited to have found the log! They truly do not get much better preserved than this folks, no matter what forest you're looking at! It's just amazing how beautiful petrified wood can be and this fine specimen found halfway around the world shows to what lengths people will go to bring these treasures to market! If you don't own a top grade piece form this increasingly important deposit yet in your own collection, this is your chance. This is a flat, rectangular slab cut from the center of a nice sized log. This stone has been professionally polished on a special lap we built that produces a flat face and a mirror perfect shine. It is a perfect slab cut from the center of the log. The polish really is liquid perfect - a difference in the quality products Sticks-in-Stones has built its reputation on! It measures about 5 1/2" x 1 5/8" across the mirror polished face.
