This is a medium sized, nicely prepared display specimen from an ancient fossil hardwood tree! This beautiful natural petrified wood sculpture is from one of Oregon's finest petrified wood deposits! The massive McDermitt caldera straddles the Oregon-Nevada border and preserved petrified wood in several exposures, each with its own character. This wood is now preserved in agate with coffee, cream and chocolate coloring - the hallmarks of this h...ighly prized fossil wood location - home to some of the best agatized wood in the entire region! The growth structure from this ancient tree is still visible, marking time and the passage of seasons long forgotten. This magnificent specimen was once an ancient hardwood but today it's pure fossil gemstone! Prepared in our shop, this ancient fossil truly comes back to life with a vibrant, highly polished face revealing the timeless mystery of the tree now turned stone!This is a really beautiful specimen of the petrified wood found in a desolate sagebrush desert that spans over 100 square miles on the Oregon/Nevada border. The area is actually a giant caldera (crater) with several different fossil wood producing digs. The wood is highly valued by petrified wood and gemstone collectors because the wood grain is typically exceptional and the agate that it's preserved in is hard, solid and capable of being polished to a brilliant lustre. McDermitt wood is consistently some of the finest petrified wood found anywhere on the planet. The colors are usually based in browns and creams. The lighter colors are usually near the rind where the thick ash beds that preserved the wood appear to have lightened the dark silica interiors. This is a really nice, intricately shaped wedge of petrified wood from a very well preserved log with absolutely gorgeous gem quality agate in many warm, natural woody tones preserving this ancient fossil. The exterior is still ash white - colored by the ancient volcanic blast that buried this prehistoric forest. The inside, however, is a richly colored array of gem quality agate that preserved the wood grain beautifully in every detail! The cell structure from the growth rings in this attractive fossil specimen are very well defined and flow artfully. This is one of Oregon's premier petrified wood deposits known to collectors the world over. If you don't have a specimen from this area, this would be a dandy to get you acquainted!! This wedge shaped display piece was cut at a steep sloping angle and then polished to show off all the gemmy detail inside. The base is cut flat so that you can present it nicely without a stand and show it off on a bookshelf or table. It took a beautiful polish, it really does look like a mirror! It's another one of those beautiful fossil treasures that some happy Sticks-in-Stones customer is going to flip over! This piece stands about 4 3/4" tall and measures about 6" x 4 5/8" across the polished face. Weight is approx. 2.64 lbs.
