You are bidding on a vintage ZIPPO... lighter manufactured by the Zippo Manufacturing Co. in Bradford, PA circa 1950's, and stamped with Patent No. 2517191. This lighter is listed as 'used', but it is in mint condition, and it has never been used nor .fired up. It contains no lighter fluid and never has, but it does contain a flint which I installed in order to test the spark. A spare flint is included for convenience and has been placed in the hole at the bottom of the lighter where you fill it up with lighter fluid is so desired.
This lighter has a brushed chrome finish, and it is inscribed on the front with a family owned business name of 'WAHL' which was (and I believe still is) a Heating and Cooling Contractor business located in Wilmington, Delaware. The lighter comes in its original ZIPPO box which can be slightly raised from behind in order to display the lighter slightly upright (see first 2 photos).
Underneath the encircled 'WAHL' name are two telephone numbers, one beginning with the letters 'OL' and the other beginning with the letters 'PO'. This system of using letters at the beginning of a phone number, and which were associated with telephone exchange names or words, was a system that started in the 1930s and lasted well into the '60s.
During those years, full words were used at the beginning of a phone number when referring to that number in order to assist people, especially younger children, with remembering the full seven digit telephone number, and because they were easy to understand, especially for switchboard operators. Each letter was associated with the number on the telephone dial. Example: 'PO' was the abbreviation for one of the exchange names known as 'PORTER' - The 'P' and the 'O' are associated with the telephone dial numbers of '7' and '6', respectively, so in the case of this lighter that you see above, the phone number under the WAHL name on the right is 764-3250, and the phone number on the left is 654-8781, the 'OL' being associated with the exchange name of 'OLYMPIA'. These abbreviated letters used at the beginning of a phone number were often associated with multiple exchange names, depending on the phone number's Area Code.
As mentioned above, this lighter has never been used, but PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS Prior To Bidding for more details and condition, and feel free to ask any questions - The Candy Stripe box does has a few mars on the face and on the upper left hand corner of it, andthe insert of the lighter where you fill it up with lighter fluid is somewhat tough to remove, but, with some strong fingers and a little coaxing, it will come out if someone actually wants to fill it up and use it.
