YONGZHENG FLAMBE SANG DE BOEUF VASE Qing Dynasty 1700s Antique Chinese Porcelain
Item History & Price
Exquisite example of Chinese sang de Boeuf glazework with brilliant flambé flashes of gorgeous blue and purple. Of strong and handsome bottle form, with the globular body rising to a cylindrical neck and wide flared mouth. The neck exhibits rarely seen, subtly incised bands representing the joints in a stalk of bamboo. This is quite unusual and indicates that the potter spent e...xtra time in creating this vase for an important patron. The combination of the well balanced form, brilliant coloration, and subtle detail, is utterly magnificent. The interior of the mouth is also stunning, with the flambé blue encircling the opening like a glowing halo. The body of the vase exhibits beautiful age-related iridescence if held at the right angle in the light. Further, there is gentle crazing to areas of the glaze surface. The vase is of significant size, measuring approximately 14 inches tall, and stands upon a raised foot which displays very old chipping. The underside is marked with the incised four character Yongzheng mark of the period within the burnt orange ground inside the footring. The aforementioned chipping does not detract from the overall magnificence of the vase since it is on the underside, and would be completely invisible when displayed in the right stand. This allows for the rare opportunity to obtain a magnificent Yongzheng vase at a fraction of the cost of similar examples.A similarly incised mark may be seen on a Yongzheng flambé glazed bottle vase sold by Christie's on May 11. 2015 for 434, 000 Pounds:http://www.alaintruong.com/archives/2015/04/26/31953191.htmlhttps://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-very-rare-and-magnificent-flambe-glazed-bottle-5889955-details.aspx
A similarly incised mark may also be seen on a Yongzheng flambé jardinière sold at Sotheby's on Dec 11, 2014:http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2014/arts-asie-pf1417/lot.69.html
