Reference Number: Avaluer:4457841
Original Description:
The pincer marks of several versions of crabs have been confirmed in the El Pueblo facies. How these crabs were surviving predators is beyond me. Vertical holes running through two or three layers of rock might be the answer. These holes have been found in water ingress and outgress points where pools of water delayed concretion. Another, often neglected, aspect of early Permian survival is the toxic defense of many of the animals. The crabs might have also been of the well-armore...d type, with a thick upper plate. Large scorpion pincer marks have also been excavated in the El Pueblo facies, identified by pincer marks that are much thinner. This slab exhibits initial claw-point impressions (bottom of slab) and pincer marks where it pulled itself further into the water. The disappearance of the pod and pincer traces is a mystery unless this crab climbed onto vegetation, fell to predation, was a swimming crab, or was carried away by rushing water at the outlet side of the swamp. Slab about 3/8 inch thick.
