I believe this is a late 19th century Japanese articulated wood model of a crayfish (I think it's a crayfish !). The legs are each articulated in two places and the five section tail also moves. The large antennae close to the head are articulated in two places but please note one of these has been broken off at the joint. The main body is carved and quite detailed and the rear section of the body is also articulated. There is some damage to the crayfish and this is as already, mention...ed one of the antennae has broken off and is loose and there are another two pieces which I think belong to the front of the head. I have not been able to find a signature so I am assuming Japanese around the 1880's. Overall length is a large 34cms length from tail to the main section of the antennae, the full length with antennae extended is approx. 59cms. Maximum width is 29cms with claws extended, all sizes approx. Weight is about 850 grams. I have not attempted to reglue the loose pieces but someone has in the past.
