Here we have a superb & rare 1899 antique briar estate pipe in the straight 'dublin' shape, complete with hallmarked sterling silver ferrule, and crafted by famous British pipe-maker, "BBB" ('Blumfeld's Best Briars').
It comes complete in its original fitted presentation case printed with the "BBB" rhombuslogo in gold on the interior.
The briar has a wonderful, varied grain incorporating birdseyes and linears.
The briar shank is adorned with the "BBB" ...rhombus logo over "Own Make"."BBB" again on the silver ferrule above "AF&Co" (for 'Adolph Frankau & Co'), followed by three silver hallmarks (Anchor, letter "z", Lion) for Birmingham, 1899, England.
"In 1847, Adolph Frankau arrived in London and quickly understood opportunities that the market of tobacco presented, in full expansion. He created the company "Adolph Frankau & Co" and became an importer of meerschaum pipes and supplies in connection with tobacco. He took under his wing a young 14 year old boy, Louis Blumfeld. The initials once stood for Blumfeld’s Best Briars after Louis Blumfeld, who took over the management of the Adolph Frankau Company in 1856. After his death, the BBB gradually became known as Britain’s Best Briars. Soon to be the oldest English trademark in current use and the first pipe ever to have a registered trade mark"-Pipedia
The pipe has been only lightly smoked and remains in excellent condition - just a few very light scratches on the briar- and a few light teethmarks on the stem.
There is just a very shallow layer of carbon in the chamber.The stem screws very securely to the shank, and air flows through the pipe freely.
The case is in very good condition overall, though it no longer clasps shut.
