This Mark J Scearce Kentucky Sterling Silver Mint Julep Cup is stamped with Lyndon Baines Johnson’s (LBJ) initials. As seen in photo, there are a couple of minor nicks to bottom bands which cannot be seen when the cup is displayed. These Presidential handmade cups were made to order and there were never hundreds on a shelf for sale so there are a limited number of cups available since the cups get passed down in families. They were inspired by cups made in 1795. When they were ordere...d, Wakefield Scearce stamped the initials of the USA President in office at the time it was made on the bottom of the cup in addition to the sterling mark, the company’s eagle hallmark, Mark J Scearce, Shelbyville, Kentucky. There is no monogram or dedication.
These cups have a long history with the Kentucky Derby and the Mint Julep has been associated with the Derby for over 100 years. The presidential initials began with the Truman administration and a cup has been sent to each president since to say “Congratulations.”
