I believe that this antique Chinoiserie tilt-top tilt top table / stand is of English origin, and would have been used as a candle stand or petite tea table. It measures 28 1/4" tall when the top is locked in the down position, 35" ta;; when the top is tilted up, 15" wide, and 12" long. It has a weighted base, to keep it stabilized. This weighted base is ingenious, and I have never seen anything like it, as the underside of the base was carved / gouged out neatly in a circl...e, before filling this circular moat with molten lead, as shown. There is a typical brass locking mechanism to keep the table in position when in-use. The table is black lacquered, and has many layers of gold gilding, along with other coloring, to depict an embossed Chinese farming scene with men picking fruit from a tree, possibly pomegranates. There are other gold gilding highlights in areas of the turnings on the central post, and to add decoration to the three bentwood buttresses which stabilize the base. There are three gold gilt wooden ball feet on the underside, as shown. This table is comprised of thin and delicate wooden components, so it is fragile by design. I believe that it dates from around 1840, thus it has had some old repairs performed upon it over its lifetime. The repairs were executed professionally and do not detract from its utility or beauty.
