Offering a finely woven antique early 20th century Karok (Karuk) or Wiyot (Hupa, Yurok) Northwestern California oval-shaped, small-scaled polychrome treasure basket, with warps (foundation) of peeled hazel rods and wefts of split and peeled conifer root. Decorated on the exterior body with a central band of serrated geometric shapes worked in black (maidenhair fern stems) against a white ground (beargrass), with a repeating descending triangular rim design in black below the rim and checkered de...sign in black and white above the base. Oval-shaped base enhanced with white overlay stitches surrounding a unique exposed peeled hazel rod warp start.
The basket is overall in very good antique condition, with very minimal scattered loss of overlay stitches. Rim finish is cut-warp, and a few of the warps are slightly shorter than the rest at the rim. Sold in as-is condition. Please fully examine photographs, and feel free to ask questions.
