TAKING THE OATH and DRAWING RATIONS
Plaster, painted; height 23 inchesSigned JOHN ROGERS/NEW YORKPatented January 30, 1866
When food was offered to those willing to take the oath of allegiance to the union, proud and spirited Southerners were left no choice.Although this group depicts a Southern lady in a situation of unqualified compromise, most Southerners felt that Mr. Rogers had shown in a sympathetic and understanding light, actually as a tribute to Southern womanhood. Her f...ace eloquently expresses the struggle between her devotion to the South and her love for her son whom she must feed. The story even seems to express the reluctance and embarrassment of the officer administering the oath.Probably the most genuinely admired of all the statues he ever modeled, Mr Rogers himself acknowledged that it was his best work.
The group has been repainted.
