Antique Chinese Blue Silk Gold Embroidered Dragon Phoenix Wedding Skirt Dress
Item History & Price
This antique Chinese blue silk gold embroidered dragon phoenix wedding skirt dress dates from the 1920s, but was created from an older 19th century Qing Dynasty wedding skirt. It is made of a royal blue color silk fabric, with colorful raised padded satin stitch hand embroidery work and gold thread couching embroidery work done in a dragon and phoenix motif surrounded by auspicious sym...bols Eight Buddhist symbols of good fortune and waves of water along the bottom. The Chinese consider the dragon and phoenix symbolic of blissful relations between husband and wife, a common yin and yang metaphor. This beautiful Chinese court Manchu women's wedding skirt has been reworked into a 1920s style two piece dress with the two matching dragon apron panels used on the tabard tunic top with open sides, a pleated panel skirt, missing the waistband and both are fully lined in a bright orange silk fabric. The top measures 31 inches long, 12 inches wide and the skirt is 32 inches long, with a 35 inch waist, 58 inch hips. It is in good as-is condition, with a scattering of some small faint stains, a few mended repairs on the skirt which is missing the waistband, closure and several frays splits along the silk trim edging (see close-ups). Great for upcycling or restoring. This is truly a wonderful piece of custom made antique Chinese wearable art!
