. EXQUISITE ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON MOTHER OF GODOUR LADY OF KAZAN 18th CENTURY Offered is an exquisite antique Russian orthodox iconof Our Lady of Kazan, 18th century. It is hand painted with tempera colors, gold leaf and levkas (gesso) on wooden panel. The icon panel has a kovcheg(recessed square central area for the main image). The kovcheg is more characteristicof earlier icons dating from the 1700's or earlier. Into the back of the boardare carved s...paces for panel cross members or "back slats". These backslats were used in Russian icons prior to 1880/1890. Subsequent to 1880/1890advances in materials negated the need for these cross members. Our Lady of Kazan is an icon of the Theotokos (motherof God) popular in Russia since the 16th century. The image of Our Lady ofKazan is said to have come to Russia from Constantinople in the 13th century.After the Tatars besieged Kazan and made it the capital of their khanate in1438, the icon disappeared, and it is not mentioned again until the 16thcentury, some years after the liberation of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible in 1552. Size of icon: 30 cm X 25 cm X 2.5 cm (11.8 in. X 9.8in. X 1.0 in); weight is 786 grams (1.7 lbs.). The icon is in very goodcondition. The back slats of the wooden panel are missing. There is a smallwood loss and inactive worm holes from age on the back (pictured). The icon pictured isthe one you will receive so please examine all pictures carefully.
