Antique English Infill Smoothing Plane Gunmetal & Rosewood Circa 1900
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:45162534 | Product Type: Planes |
This plane belonged to my grandfather when he was a cabinetmaker in London and would date to around 1890 - 1900.It has his name A SAMS stamped into the wood as was common in those days. There is another name stamped into the Rosewood rear section from a previous owner so may be older than the dates above. The gunmetal body has a nice aged patina and the Rosewood is still quite polished and has nice... colour. In particular the wedge has very rich colour and a nice "cupid bow" carving. The steel sole has some faint marks and scratches and very slight pitting. The cutting steel blade is sharp and in excellent condition. The cutting steel has pitting and darkened from rust on the upper half and has the maker mark of "BUCK AND RYAN WARRANTED CAST STEEL". The cap iron has the maker mark of "WM MARPLES SHEFFIELD". I have included numerous high quality photos from all angles to clearly show the condition of all aspects of the the plane. While probably sort after as a collectors piece the plane is still very useable if so desired.Dimensions: Length of the steel sole base is 7½ inches, the beveled cutting iron is 2inches and one eighth wide. Weight 1.9 kg - see photo of the plane in my hand which gives a good idea of its size. Can be picked up from my location in Melbourne, shipped anywhere in Australia or overseas carefully packaged. Please see if interested my other two concurrent listings -another smaller gunmetal and ebony shoulder plane and larger gunmetal and rosewood infill shoulder plane all belonging to my grandfather and collector quality. Can combine to reduce postage costs.
