Item Description Up for sale isthis dark green and red Hampton Butte petrified wood specimen. Hampton Butte, Oregon specimens are known worldwide for their beauty and variety of colorfulshades. Th...is piece measures about 6 inches long by 2-1/2 inches by 2-1/2inches. The piece has been cut and polished in one area to reveal the beauty ofthe ancient wood structure. The piece’sexterior shows bark and grain structures with worm holes showing on the face. During the Eoceneepoch tiny four toed horses and rhinos roamed the plains of central Oregon. They grazedbeside stands of ancient Redwood and Pine trees. In the nearby low-lying swampsalligators cruised around Bald Cypress trees. This was approximately 50 millionyears ago. During that very dramatic Geological period, nearby volcanoeserupted and some of the wood from those trees was permanently preserved aspetrified wood. The preserving mineral was quartz one of nature's more durablegemstones. Thepre-mineralized wood from Hampton Butte, DeschutesCounty, Central Oregon, USAis composed of agate and jasper as well as preserved cell structure. Colorsinclude Carnelian reds, forest greens, dark mustard, light greens, sandstone, browns and occasionally blue/green. Many specimens are perfect casts with nobroken surfaces. The presence of decayed cell structure and beetle larvaeborings suggests that these are molded from dead wood. The shape of thespecimens and the material they are made of is quite a contrast. It's in theshape of something that should be very soft, light, and rough, but it is hard, heavy, naturally smooth and polished. This piece wouldlook great in your cabinet or on your desk.
