DESCRIPTION:This an antique, turn of the century (c1895) porcelain face dial bicycle c...yclometer made to be used alongside a wheel peg(not included). It was made by the New York Standard Watch Company. Item is Stamped 28" on the back indicating that this cyclometer was designed for early, safety bicycles with 28" wheels. This cyclometer would be correct for any turn of the century bike with 28" wheels through the 1920s until the advent of the 26" balloon wheels starting in the late 1920s/early 1930s.Built with antique pocket watch quality, this 122 year old, antique cyclometer is still in working condition! When the wheel is turned, the blued steel marker/pointer advances around the outside edge of the dial. I turned it enough to advance the miles one click, so I believe it to be completely functional. It is missing a crystal...which should be easy to replace.
It retains it's original, porcelain face with no fractures in it. The original, thick, beveled crystal that used to come with these cyclometers is missing. But the original box with all of the instructions is still with it and still intact, although it is showing it's age a bit.
Along with the box, this piece would be an amazing compliment to the collection of any collector of antiques, early bicycle equipment, or pocket watches. It is in working condition and has even developed a little patina. Just enough to make it look nice.
You are buying what is pictured; the unit itself without the spoke peg to turn the wheel. The mounting bracket is not present, nor is the crystal but those should not be hard to find replacements for. The box comes with it and that is a rare thing.
Case measures approx. 2" in diameter, or nearly 52mm, not including stalk or wheel.
I found an original ad for this cyclometer on the internet; it is posted in the photos for reference. It is not part of the sale.
