A beautiful little maiolica / tin-glaze / delft medicinal / apothecary jar or Albarello of cylindrical form typically painted in dark blue with buildings in a landscape and trees; Italy, Naples, circa 1740 - 1760.
This delightful little Albarello is only 5 1/2 inches tall and in absolutely wonderful period condition with just a few minor glaze losses and typical wear to the rim from cleaning over hundreds of years (see the detailed photos provided).
These delightful little ...jars were used for storing and dispensing a variety of medicines and ointments, often in monastic pharmacies. This one is typically boldly decorated in deep blue with a fanciful landscape and buildings. The base of the jar is unglazed to save wasting the expensive white tin-glaze in which the jar was dipped prior to firing.
