This is a late 19th century quilled pipe bag, believed to be Lakota Sioux. This bag has significant condition issues so please pay particular attention to the accompanying photos as they are part of the description. This pipe bag is being sold with NO RESERVE. The bag comes with an oak display case with a black velvet liner. However, the bag has never been displayed in this display case, and sits loosely in the case for photos. The oak display case is 11 in...ches wide by 27 inches long by 2 ½ inches deep. It will be shipped with a plexiglass top which has a broken corner and is not quite big enough to cover the display. Buyer will need to consider replacing the top with new plexiglass or glass if planning to display the pipe bag. The pipe bag itself is approximately 23 inches long by 8 inches wide. The length includes the 6 inch fringe pieces at the bottom which are not attached to the bag. The bag is made of deer hide which has dried out and is brittle and not pliable. It is decorated in nice quill work in bright red with purple accents. The detached leather fringe pieces have also been wrapped in quills in bright red, yellow and blue colors. There is some flaking of the quills and some full quill loss throughout this piece. The geometric quilled design on the front of the bag is complemented with a similar design on the back, but with narrower lines.The bag appears to have suffered some damage from fire at some point, as there are burned and charred spots at the top of the bag. Given the significant condition issues, I do not know if this piece can be restored. I do not know if the hide can be made pliable. And I do not know if the fringe can be reattached to the bag by a conservator. However, I do believe the pieces of the bag and fringe can be made into a nice display in the oak case in their current condition. Selling “as-is”. Buyer pays $25 toward shipping and insurance.
