Antique 1901 Painting Of Indian Chief Washakie Eastern Shoshone - Signed
Item History & Price
The portrait is of Chief Washakie, an Eastern Shoshone. We assumed the amateur ...artist painted from a photograph, so after much Googling we found this photo of the chief (see my 3rd picture...this is not part of the sale, I just copied it from the internet). Most everything about the painting fits the photo...from the neck scarf, headdress, piece pipe, and ring, to the wrinkle (or scar) on his cheek. Chief Washakie was born somewhere between 1798 and 1810. He died February 20, 1900 (interestingly, the painting was done the following year). Sure wish I knew who did the painting...someone close to him? He has an interesting history...which can be found on Wikipedia.
CONDITION: The cardboard has deteriorated around the edges as seen in the photos and needs proper framing. I photographed it sitting on my couch...the bottom design you see in the first photo (and 7, 8) is my couch!
