A true icon of English Art Deco design, represented in the 20th century design collections of museums.Known as the "Tennis Ball Ashtray" as it was supposedly originally used as a promo piece for the Dunlop Rubber Company.
The design patent was applied for by Andrew Vaughan Jones, MD Roanoid Plastics Ltd, & the London retailer Roxon Ltd.This piece has the design number (GB 389, 426)

The application was filed in 1932 & granted in 1933 (GB 389, 426).
The Museum of Design in Plastic in the UK credits the
original design to Robert Conroy-Robertson.This ashtray is usually referred to as having been crafted in Bakelite, but more specifically the rests & base are made from Thiourea Formaldehyde,
the top from marbled Phenol Formaldehyde & originally produced in 5 colourways. The base is weighted with a lead plug to prevent the ashtrayfrom tipping, but this obviously did not prevent it fromrolling off the table as nearly all of the surviving exampleswill have some degree of damage!
Condition Report:
Has some usual discoloration to the Bakelite. Two cracks can be found on below the fold out rests. One of the cracks is also showing a surface chip.
The damage is pictured #9.
