Early AmericanCopperware Still JugThis is a wonderful 18th century hand hammered copper still jug. As the name implies these copper jugs were used during the mid 1700s to make small batches of alcohol and are a scarcely encountered piece of colonial metalware. This jug is typical in size and style being 9 inches tall and roughly 9 inches in diameter, holding about a gallon and having the classic and esthetically pleasing bulbous top form that is normally encountered with these sca...rce jugs. The construction of this jug is made up of five seperate pieces. The body of the jug wraps entirely around and was hammered from a single piece of copper with a dovetailed and brazed seam in the rear beneath the riveted handle. The top of the jug is also nicely dovetailed and brazed to the body with a small neck with pour spout on top and a single hammered and soldered copper plate making up the base. The surface has a pleasing natural well aged patina, there are a few recent scratches but they do nothing to diminish its rustic charm. This jug represents a pleasing combination of functionality and artistic beauty, fitting perfectly into the decor of nearly any setting from an 18th century new england home to a rustic western cabin.
