Very Fine Basket from Wounaan people of Panama (with provenance).
Provenance: Artisan: Lino Tascon, Ethnicity: Wounaan, Village: Capetuira, Darien, Panama. Purchased between 2000 – 2016 by current owner from Wounaan dealer in Panama (Fair Trade prices to artisans and commission paid to dealer).
Materials: Coil: split fibers of Nahuala = “Black Palm” (Carludovica p...almata)Surface: spit (sun bleached & dyed) fibers of “Chunga” Palm (Astrocaryum standelyanum)Technique: “Deinte pienado” (“comb tooth”); This technique accentuates a very smooth, continuous surfaceMotifs: Representational (butterflies)Colors from natural vegetable dyes: White is sun bleached fiber; Dark brown / Black are derived from cocobolo wood chips (Dalbergia retusa), jaguar fruit (Jenipa americana), & tannic soils; Yellow-Gold from turmeric (Curcuma longa) and teak leaves; Shades of Red, also Yellow-Red, from the annatto fruit (Bixa oreyana); Also from native plants are shades of Green, Blue, Rose, Purple, Lavender, Pink, Maroon, Burnt Seinna, Copper, & Orange.
