See photos.  About the Mossi People“The v...arious tribesliving in Burkina Faso (formerly Upper-Volta), Ghana and Togo cultivate milletand cotton, and rear cattle in the northern savannah regions. Their religiousactivities are dictated by the rhythm of the seasons – during the dry season inparticular, when the fields are fallow, large festivals and ceremonies areorganized.The first Mossiempire was founded during the 15thcentury by invaders from northern Ghana.Today, the Mossi are the largest tribe living in Burkina Faso. They number 2, 000, 000and are the only tribe discussed in this chapter who have a centralizedgoverning body, in addition to clans and professional corporations led byelders known as Zaksoba.Mossi statue – whichmeasure between 60 and 100 cm in height – represent deceased chiefs. They standon slightly bent legs, with arms set apart from their bodies, and have roundedheads bearing flattened faces. They were symbolically buried in place of thechief’s corpse during sumptuous ceremonies, while the actual corpse was secretlyinhumed immediately after death.
