Antique Bohland & Fuchs, Circa 1890, Copper Cornet Stenciled By Dyers
This rare piece is worthy of professional restoration or displayedin a museum!
This Bohland & Fuchs Model 2, circa 1890 cornet is made ofcopper with brass fittings. It isstenciled “DYERS Improved MODEL” and measures 12-1/2” in length minus themouthpiece which is missing. Dyer was adealer and importer in Boston MA, Makato & St Paul MN. He became thelargest music house west of Chica...go. He started in Boston 1855-1868. He movedto Mankato MN 1869-1882, In St Paul from 1882 using the name Dyer & Howard.In 1885, the name was changed to W.H. Dyer and Bro. This was part of an estate that we purchasedin its entirety. It was listed in theestate catalog at $750.00 with no maker’s name. I had to perform additional research and want to thank the experts forhelping me identify it
The condition of this cornet is rough with dents, oxidationand a few missing parts. Its rarity and desirabilityboth place it in class that would make it worthy of display in a museum orjustify the expense of a professional restoration. All three slides still operate and springback. There is no case for this and themouthpiece and wish-bone spit key is missing. The missing mouthpiece doesn’t pose a problemand the spit key can be found since it was in production for three decades onless rare models. Here are some notes inregards to this exact cornet by Kenton Scott of Horn-U-Copia Brass Instruments Makersonline reference which was forwarded to Ron Berndt of Tumpet-History.com: “From that, it appears theyran multiple retail operations in the Midwest, mostly in the music business, and stenciled instruments from many makes. In the late 19th century, Bohland& Fuchs was the most prolific supplier of stencil product in the world. It's too bad the wish-bonespit key is missing, as the horn appears relatively intact otherwise. Itspossible you may find a replacement on a far worse wreck on EBay at some point, as that key assembly was common to several B+F models over a 3 decade period.
