Petrified Wood Specimen
This natural petrified wood specimen is 5" tall, 6 1/4" wide and 2 1/4" thick. It weighs 2lbs 10oz (1, 186g).
The fossilized wood has been cut flat across the base so that it stands firmly upright. The stone has dark brown to almost black colors with very well preserved wood grain patterns on all sides. There is a scattering of quartz across the top and the narrow ends of the wood that gives it a slight druzy sparkle under direct light.
...Petrified wood is a fossil that forms when plant material is buried in mud or sand, protected from oxygen and bacteria. Over millions of years the wood is gradually replaced by silica quartz, agate, calcite or pyrite minerals that soak into the wood through the groundwater, creating beautiful stone replicas of the original tree or plant. In folklore fossil wood is said to increase patience and endurance, and promote good health and longevity.

All of our photos show dry stones under natural sunlight. We don't wet our stones to make them look better.
Most of our stones are 'hand made' in our Iowa workshop, where we cut, grind, drill, tumble and polish all kinds of pretty things.
If you have any questions about stones, rock tumbling or lapidary work please feel free to get in touch.
