This sale is for a piece of rare chromium petrified wood from the Winslow, Arizona area in the proximity of the Petrified Forest and belongs to the conifer genus/species Araucarioxylon arizonicum or possibly to another genus found at this locality, Woodworthia. This discovery was made over 25 years ago in an isolated area. Found in a small area of a fraction of an acre, this is some of the rarest petrified wood found in the United States. It is possible this preservation was... localized to two trees as very little was found in this deposit but two genus of trees have been recognized. This particular piece measures about 1 3/8 inches long and 1 inch wide and weighs 17 grams. Most pieces are much smaller than this. The stand is not part of the sale. Beautiful piece of a limb. Please review the photos as they are part of the description and show the actual item you will receive. The wood is the same age as that found in the Petrified Forest, stemming from the Triassic Chinle Formation of about 180 million years ago. The unique green color imparted to the wood at this small location is due to the element chromium, which appears to have been present at this location and, as far as has been seen, no other. The wood contains about 2% chromium, the same element which gives emeralds their green color. Interesting to note is that as the humidity rises, the darker deep green these specimens turn.
