Antique 1860's E. R. Squibb Medicine Bottle. Deep Green-Aqua Hue. Condition is no chips/cracks and is an Antique with 160 years on it. Dr. Edward Robinson Squibb was born on the 4th of July, 1819 in my own hometown of Wilmington, Delaware and he died October 25, 1900 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Squibb was a U.S. chemist and pharmaceutical manufacturer who developed methods of making pure & reliable drugs, thus he founded his company to manufacture them. His passion for producing hi...gh quality medicines was born from serving 4 years on U. S. Naval ships as a Navy Medical Officer observing the poor quality of medicines supplied to the Navy. He convinced the Navy to produce their own medicines rather than contracting with the lowest outside bidder. Between 1852 - 1857 he discovered processes for making chloroform, fluid extracts, bismuth salts, & other preparations. After Squibb resigned from the Navy, Dr. Richard S. Satterlee, Surgeon General of the U.S. Army, suggested that Squibb start a laboratory of his own to supply the Army with reliable drugs. He borrowed $1, 300 from a friend & set up a lab in Brooklyn which burnt down 1 month later due to an ether explosion. Squibb was badly burned saving his records & notes. 1 year later his lab was rebuilt & he advertised 38 preparations. By 1883 he was manufacturing 324 products & shipping them all over the world. His drugs were in extreme demand during the Civil War. Thanks to Squibb, laws relating the enforcement of better drugs were enacted. HIs 2 sons joined his company, so if any bottles are labled with "& Sons" they are post-Civil War & post 1892. Note - this bottle was dug up in ancient garbage dump used by miners in Leadville, Colorado. Selling my entire antique bottle collection because I am moving cross country into a smaller house.
