Beautiful and verycollectable true skyline type of sterling souvenir spoon from MinneapolisMinnesota dating back to years around 1900 featuring on the front of the handlevery ornate figural skyline with bridge structure and on the right side writingMILLING DISTRICT MINNEAPOLIS MINN. and stack of wheat close to the bowl. On theback more images: MINNE HA-HA FALLS, below PUBLIC LIBRARY, then COURT HOUSE ANDCITY HALL and lastly three barrels. Condition of the spoon is excellent, measures 5... 3/8” inch long (134 mm), feels solid. On the back is marked STERLINGand has maker’s markings of P & B within embossed hearts for PAYE and BAKERMFG. The firstskyline spoon design, on the tag end of the Art Nouveau era, was patented in1901 and by 1913 designs were beginning to change under the influence of ArtDeco and no more new true skylines were introduced. A true skyline should beviewed horizontally (the exception being the three stacked skylines of Chicago, New York and Boston) which eliminates monuments such as the Statue of Libertyand the Washington Monument. There are city skylines, building skylines, riverscape skylines, bridge skylines and natural skylines (mountains and such).Partial skylines are when less than half the handle shows a skyline. I onlyknow of only one enclosed skyline that Ouida Verizzo, author of AmericanSkyline Souvenir Spoons, considers a true and that's an Atlantic City spoon.The other pointed handled spoons with a band of silver enclosing the cutoutsaround a few buildings, a mountain or a scene near the tip of the handle arenot true skylines.
