These elements areresponsible for the color variations. Smithsonite occurs in a wide variation ofcolors. For example, copper often causes green or bright blue colors, andcobalt causes a pink to purple color as with this featured specimen. Cadmiummakes Smithsonite yellow, and iron gives it a brown to reddish-brown color.Other colors of Smithsonite include yellow-green, orange-yellow, gray, whiteand even colorless. They generally occurin globular or botryoidal-like forms. Many of the rounded forms have a verydistinct feathery or sparkling light effect. Smithsonite belongs tothe calcite group of minerals, a group of related carbonates that areisomorphous with one another. They are similar in many physical properties, andmay partially or fully replace one another, forming a solid solution series. All members of the calcite group crystallize in the trigonal system, haveperfect rhombohedral cleavage, and exhibit strong double refraction intransparent rhombohedrons, as shown with this featured specimen.Note:**All specimens aretaken in natural and regular lighting only. This specimen looks better inperson in order to appreciate its natural color, unique form and adorableshape, plus the sparkling effects of this specimen, especially its unique doublerefraction properties canbe difficult to capture in its entirety on camera.
